When you live in the middle of nowhere, better known as the boonies, like we do, you know that you are surrounded by all sorts of wild life. I know that there are deer, bunnies, squirrels, raccoon, foxes, coyotes…and ugh spiders and snakes!
I thought that I had reached my highest level of “EEK” possible last year at Emalee’s birthday party. All the kids outside playing and what pops up under a sprinkler?? Black widows! Oh my gosh! Can you say one freaked out moma?!?
What kills me is just before the party we went outside and checked under and around the entire yard to be sure that there weren’t any spiders or bees or anything hanging around. My hubby even sprayed some stuff to make sure! Guess that wasn’t good enough…no…they had to crawl their little behinds under there and freak me, along with every other mom, out and make us want to have the kids stop playing.
We ended up using it as a bit of a lesson and showed the kids what the spider looked like and how dangerous they are. We talked about what to do if you see one and all that good stuff.
Let me stress something here…
this.is.where.I.go.for.runs!!!
ALONE!
I run down this path about the same time we were there today!
Okay, I feel like you have a good grasp on how I feel right now.
So, moving on in the story. As we walk down the path and Emalee rides just ahead I notice a stump that I don’t remember being there…
Just as Emalee passes it, looks down and screams…I remember that there isn’t a stump there.
It’s a freaking snake! A HUGE freaking snake! My hubby proceeds to tell me to calmly walk by it and head to the house so he can come back and kill it.
Calmly? Walk by it? Hahaha who is he kidding? I just shit myself!
I try to pretend to be calm so Emalee won’t freak out…which I am almost certain I failed miserably!
Emalee cries and screams and rides her bike as fast as she can back to the house while I “power walk” with a stroller. All the while in my mind the snake is following me! Of course I’m too much of a wussy to look and see…because you know as soon as I do the dang thing is going to get me!
Once safely back at the house, my hubby gets a shovel and the pistol and heads back after it. I mean we can’t just let it be that close to the house with the chicken coop out there. We want baby chickens soon!
He ends up falling in a hole and scraping his leg…but in the end we have one very large, very DEAD snake!
